Inspection methods

Inspection and testing methods

Every method answers a specific question and has blind spots. Choosing and specifying the right method is half of a reliable inspection.

What we perform, witness and coordinate

Each method page explains the principle, typical applications, what the method detects, its limitations and how to specify it. The QUALITAS TR role is stated clearly: some methods are performed by our engineers during inspections, others are performed by certified operators or laboratories and witnessed or reviewed by us.

Nothing on these pages replaces the method standards or the acceptance criteria in your specification. They are written to help buyers and engineers ask the right questions.

01Non-destructive testing

Surface and volumetric methods for welds, castings and forgings.

Visual Testing

The first and most important inspection method: surface condition, workmanship and weld profile, direct or remote.

Method guide

Ultrasonic Testing

Volumetric NDT with high frequency sound: weld flaws, laminations, internal forging defects, thickness.

Method guide

Radiographic Testing

X-ray and gamma ray imaging of internal flaws in welds and castings, with a permanent record.

Method guide

Magnetic Particle Testing

Surface and near surface crack detection in ferromagnetic materials using magnetic fields and particles.

Method guide

Liquid Penetrant Testing

Detection of surface breaking flaws in any non-porous material using penetrant and developer.

Method guide

02Measurement

Dimensional, geometrical and surface measurements.

Dimensional Measurement

Hand instruments, gauges and fixtures for size, form and position, chosen for the tolerance.

Method guide

CMM and 3D Measurement

Coordinate measuring machines, laser trackers and scanning for complex geometry and GD&T.

Method guide

03Material and mechanical testing

Identity and properties of materials.

Hardness Testing

Brinell, Rockwell, Vickers and portable hardness testing to verify heat treatment and material condition.

Method guide

Mechanical Testing

Tensile, impact, bend and fracture tests that verify material and weld properties.

Method guide

04Functional and integrity testing

Proving function, tightness and protection.

Pressure and Leak Testing

Hydrostatic, pneumatic and leak tests that prove strength and tightness of pressure equipment.

Method guide
