Welding and fabrication
ISO 15614: Specification and qualification of welding procedures for metallic materials, welding procedure test
How a welding procedure is proven by test, and what the resulting WPQR allows a fabricator to weld.
01Purpose
ISO 15614 series specifies how a preliminary welding procedure specification is qualified by welding and testing test pieces. Part 1 covers arc and gas welding of steels and nickel alloys; other parts cover aluminium and other processes.
02Scope
Qualification by test is one of several routes defined in the ISO 15607 framework, alongside tested consumables (ISO 15610), previous experience (ISO 15611), standard procedures (ISO 15612) and pre-production tests (ISO 15613).
03Main requirements
- Preliminary WPS prepared
- Test piece welded and examined: visual, NDT, destructive tests
- Hardness and impact tests where required
- WPQR records results and the range of qualification
- Production WPS written within the qualified range
04Typical applications and industries
Referenced by ISO 3834, EN 1090 and pressure equipment standards.
05Audit and inspection considerations
- Does the WPS stay within the WPQR range?
- Were impact and hardness tests done where needed?
- Is the WPQR certified by an examiner where required?
06Common nonconformities
- WPS used outside thickness or material range
- Missing impact tests for low temperature service
- WPQR from another company without transfer justification
