Inspection and testing
ISO 9712: Non-destructive testing, qualification and certification of NDT personnel
The international scheme for certifying NDT operators. Checking certificates against ISO 9712 is a basic step in NDT witnessing.
01Purpose
ISO 9712 specifies requirements for principles for the qualification and certification of personnel who perform industrial non-destructive testing.
02Scope
Covers methods such as UT, RT, MT, PT, VT, eddy current, leak and others, for industrial sectors such as castings, forgings, welds and tubes. Certification is issued by a certification body operating to ISO/IEC 17024.
03Main requirements
- Three levels of competence with defined responsibilities
- Training and industrial experience requirements
- Vision requirements, verified periodically
- Qualification examinations: general, specific and practical
- Certification by method and sector
- Validity, renewal and recertification
04Typical applications and industries
Most codes and specifications require NDT by ISO 9712 certified personnel; some sectors use other schemes such as ASNT SNT-TC-1A (employer based) or EN 4179 in aerospace.
05Audit and inspection considerations
- Is the certificate valid and for the correct method, level and sector?
- Is vision testing current?
- Does a level 2 operator sign the evaluation?
06Common nonconformities
- Operator certified for a different sector
- Expired certificates
- Level 1 personnel evaluating results
- Employer certificates where third party certification is required
