Coating, painting and galvanizing inspection

Corrosion protection fails at the weakest point. We check surface preparation, application conditions, film thickness and finish against the coating specification.

01What the service involves

Paint systems are inspected through their whole sequence: steel surface condition and preparation grade (for example Sa 2½ to ISO 8501-1), surface profile, cleanliness and dust, environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, dew point), product batches and mixing, wet and dry film thickness per coat, overcoating intervals, final appearance and, where specified, adhesion tests.

For hot-dip galvanizing we verify coating thickness by magnetic measurement, appearance and continuity, and the galvanizer's documentation, against ISO 1461 or the specified standard.

02Why buyers need it

Premature coating failure is usually caused by inadequate surface preparation or application outside the product's conditions, both invisible once the coating is applied. Inspection during the process is the only reliable control.

Coating repair at site can cost many times the original application.

03Typical applications

  • Structural steel and plant structures
  • Pressure equipment and tanks
  • Machinery and equipment frames
  • Galvanized structures and fasteners
  • Powder coated parts
  • Offshore and marine equipment

04Methodology

  1. Specification review

Coating system, surface preparation grade, coats and DFT confirmed against the product data sheets.

  2. Surface preparation

Blast grade, profile, dust and salts checked before priming.

  3. Application

Environmental conditions, mixing, WFT and overcoating intervals monitored.

  4. Final checks

DFT survey, appearance, holidays and adhesion where specified.

  5. Galvanizing

Thickness, appearance and certificates of galvanized items verified.

05Applicable standards and references

Surface cleanliness grades are defined in ISO 8501-1, corrosivity categories and paint system durability in ISO 12944, hot-dip galvanized coating requirements in ISO 1461, and film thickness measurement methods in ISO 2808. DFT acceptance rules are often taken from ISO 19840 or SSPC-PA 2 as named in the specification.

06Deliverables

  • Daily coating inspection record
  • Environmental condition log
  • DFT survey report
  • Adhesion test results where specified
  • Galvanizing inspection report

07Customer benefits

  • Coating life matching design intent
  • Problems found before the next coat
  • Objective DFT data
  • Reduced site repair
  • Warranty compliant application
