Welding and fabrication
EN 1090: Execution of steel structures and aluminium structures
The European framework for fabricating structural steel and aluminium, linked to CE marking under the Construction Products Regulation.
01Purpose
EN 1090-1 specifies requirements for conformity assessment of structural steel and aluminium components placed on the market as construction products. EN 1090-2 specifies technical requirements for the execution of steel structures; EN 1090-3 for aluminium structures.
02Scope
Execution classes EXC1 to EXC4 define increasing requirements. The execution class is specified by the designer, typically based on consequence class, service category and production category.
03Main requirements
- Factory production control certified by a notified body for CE marking
- Welding quality requirements according to ISO 3834 at a level depending on execution class
- Responsible welding coordinator with competence appropriate to the class
- Material traceability depending on class
- NDT extent and weld quality levels per class
- Geometrical tolerances (essential and functional)
- Surface preparation and corrosion protection requirements
04Typical applications and industries
Structural steel for buildings, industrial structures and infrastructure in the EU market and many export projects.
05Audit and inspection considerations
- Is the FPC certificate valid for the execution class required?
- Is the welding coordinator competent and active?
- Are tolerances and NDT extent per class applied?
06Common nonconformities
- Certified for EXC2 but producing EXC3 work
- Traceability lost after cutting
- Supplementary NDT not performed
- Hole tolerances exceeded
07How QUALITAS TR can support
We inspect fabricators against the specified execution class through steel structure inspection. CE marking certification is issued by notified bodies.
